Study Participant Guide for Duke ClinCard
Learn how to activate, use, and manage your Duke ClinCard for research study payments. This guide covers everything from checking your balance to understanding fees.
How to Use Your ClinCard
You can use your ClinCard just like a debit or credit card:
- In-store purchases (credit or debit)
- Online purchases
- ATM withdrawals (PIN required; fees apply)
- Cash withdrawal at a bank
- Bring your signed card and photo ID
- Must know your balance (teller cannot check it)
Card Setup
Activate Your Card
Your card is automatically activated when your first payment is loaded. Sign the back and begin using it immediately for credit purchases.
Set Your PIN
Call 1-866-952-3795 and follow prompts:
- Select language
- Choose account options
- Enter card number
- Enter security code
- Create and confirm 4-digit PIN
Check Your Balance
You can check your balance in several ways:
- Call Customer Service: 1-866-952-3795
- Log in at www.myclincard.com
- Use an ATM (PIN required)
- Ask at your clinic visit
Fees
No Fees For:
- Purchases (online or in-store)
- Cashing out at a bank teller
- Customer service calls
- Adding Funds
Fees may Apply For:
- Inactivity (after 6 months): $4.50/month
- ATM withdrawals
- Paper statements
⚠️ Tip: Activity resets the 6-month inactivity timer.
When Will I Get Paid?
- Payment schedule is set by your study team
- Payments are processed after each visit milestone
- You will receive a notification when funds are loaded
- Payments typically arrive within 8 business days
Tax Forms (1099)
You will received a 1099 if compensation exceeds $2,000/year
Duke employees receive a 1099 regardless of amount
