Returning Your Research Results
As part of the Memory & Aging Study, you may choose to receive certain research results. This page explains what those results mean, how they are shared, and what to expect.
What are Research Results?
If you choose, you can receive limited research findings from your participation in the study.
⚠️ Research results are not medical diagnoses.
They:
- Are not clinical tests used for healthcare
- Should not replace a medical evaluation
- Must be confirmed by a healthcare provider before making any decisions
They ARE:
- These results are provided as a courtesy (not all research studies offer this)
- Results may vary over time and differ from clinical standards
- Your results are confidential and not added to your medical record
- You may share them with your doctor if you choose
Timeline and Next Steps
- Research analyses takes time and may take 1 year or longer
- Results are processed in batches
- When ready, you will be contacted to schedule a results meeting
- Meetings are typically held via Zoom and last about 30 minutes.
Your Meeting Results
During your meeting, a study clinician will:
- Explain your research-based diagnosis
- Review your memory testing results
- Discuss genetic risk (APOE4 status)
- Share whether key brain proteins (amyloid and tau) are elevated or not
- Provide guidance on brain health and lifestyle factors
- Help you understand what your results mean in a research context
ℹ️ For spinal fluid (CSF) results:
You will be told if levels are normal, high, or low, but not exact numbers.
Important Reminders
- Participation in receiving results is optional
- Results may take time to return
- These results should not be used alone for medical decisions
- If you have concerns about memory or cognition, talk to your healthcare provider
