Scientists identify gene variant that may protect against APOE e4-related Alzheimer’s risk.

Certain versions of the fibronectin 1 gene may protect people with the APOE ε4 gene from increased Alzheimer’s disease risk, according to an NIA-funded study. The findings, published in Acta Neuropathologica, could help scientists better understand how Alzheimer’s develops, and help them determine potential new research strategies.

Medicare data analysis shows radical and ethnic disparities in dementia care costs.

An analysis of Medicare claims data found that dementia care expenditures were higher for Black and Hispanic people than White beneficiaries. These NIA-funded study results were published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

TDP-43 function is lost a decade before LATE disease onset.

Molecular and cellular changes associated with LATE, a form of dementia, begin a decade before the formation of abnormal clusters of TDP-43 that contribute to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. According to an NIA study published in Acta Neuropathologica, the brain changes associated with LATE have specific effects on memory decline and visual-spatial abilities in older adults.

Funding Opportunity

Imaging Research in Alzheimer’s and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases Program

The Association and ASNR are partnering to offer this unique funding program to leverage their respective expertise and their communities. The goal of The Alzheimer’s Association & The Foundation of the American Society of Neuroradiology Funding Opportunity, Imaging Research in Alzheimer’s and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases is to support the development of new novel imaging tools, to advance imaging-based research and to provide funding for novel and innovative imaging data analysis as relates to Alzheimer’s and related dementia
