The GENIE Study: Screening for Genetic Risk Factors of Alzheimer’s Disease

APOE4 is a gene variant that some people carry that increases their risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease later in life. Dr. Miles Berger and a team of colleagues at Duke Anesthesiology are trying to understand what effect this gene has early in life before any symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Who is Eligible?

Patients are eligible who:

• Are between the ages of 18 and 60
• Have no major neurologic or psychiatric diagnoses
• Plan on remaining in the Durham area for at least the next 12 months
• Are willing to be contacted by study staff in the future about participation in follow up research studies

What is Involved?

• A brief questionnaire
• A cheek swab or saliva collection
• Compensation for participation
